Thomas is a National Geographic Photographer and Explorer. He is a marine biologist who turned to photojournalism to broaden his impact in conservation. He is an NGS Storytelling Fellow and Director of Storytelling for Save Our Seas Foundation. For his latest National Geographic project, he is spending more than 400 days exploring the watershed of the Amazon River. He is travelling from 18,000-foot-high Andean volcanoes down to the Atlantic Ocean and then following the river plume as it arcs across the Caribbean Sea. Unlike most who have ventured before him, he is diving below the water’s surface to reveal the Amazon’s rarely glimpsed aquatic underworlds.

Tony Wu's lifelong association with the sea started when he was a child. A crab pinched his toe, and it was love at first ouch. Now that he's (somewhat) grown up, Tony devotes most of his time to researching and documenting rarely seen marine animals and environments, spending more days at sea that he does on land. Joris van Alphen is a documentary cinematographer specializing in films about people and nature. From camping in the canopy of a fig tree deep in the Amazon rainforest to diving unexplored coral reefs in the northern Moluccas, Joris has extensive experience working in remote locations. Growing up with biologist parents, he embarked on his first field trip to Africa at the age of three. He went on to study biology himself but left a career in science to become a full-time filmmaker and photographer.
